Message from the Division Director
David D'Alessio, MD

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism is dedicated to advancing the care of patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders in the Greater Cincinnati area. The division is nationally recognized for excellence in clinical care, as well as basic and clinical research. The division has 13 faculty members including clinical endocrinologists, physician-scientists and research scientists. Physicians from the division provide consultative and outpatient services for patients with endocrine disorders at University Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). In addition, the endocrinology staff supervises a hospital wide program in diabetes management for inpatients.

Outpatient activities are provided at specific endocrine and diabetes clinics at the VAMC, the Hoxworth outpatient facility, the Medical Arts Building, University Pointe and Dearborn County Hospital. These clinics provide expert diagnosis and management for patients with diseases of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal and reproductive glands, as well as diabetes and neuroendocrine tumors.

In addition, members of the division staff the Diabetes Center, a state-of-the-art outpatient clinic dedicated solely to diabetes care, and the Bone Center, the regional leader in treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. There are specialty clinics focused on patients with thyroid cancer, led jointly by physicians from the Division of Endocrinology and the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. There are also specialty clinics that focus on pituitary tumors and neuroendocrinology, a joint effort between the Division of Endocrinology and the Department of Neurosurgery.

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism plays a leading role in medical education at the College of Medicine and across the Greater Cincinnati region. Medical and graduate students rotate through the clinical and research programs in the division. In addition, residents in internal medicine and pediatrics receive didactic and clinical teaching from division faculty. There is a clinical training program with four positions for fellows receiving subspecialty training, as well as opportunities for research fellowships in the division.

Research activities in the division are extensive and focus on diabetes, obesity and metabolism, bone disease and thyroid disorders. Particular areas of emphasis are on mechanisms of disease caused by hyperglycemia, regulation of insulin secretion, islet transplantation, and autoimmunity as a mediator of endocrine disease. While much of this research is directed towards understanding basic mechanisms of disease, the division has a growing emphasis on the application of research findings and is expanding its clinical research initiatives. Researchers in the division receive grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association and other organizations who have recognized the quality and importance of this work.
