Message from the Division Director
Frank McCormack, MD

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is recognized as a national leader in education, research and clinical medicine. Areas of particular interest to the faculty include, but are not limited to, asthma, innate immunity, cystic fibrosis, critical care, rare lung disorders, health care outcomes, emphysema, interstitial lung disease, sleep disorders, and lung cancer. The division has an exceptionally strong record of extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association and elsewhere to support top-level basic and translational research into the mechanisms of these diseases.

The division consists of 19 full-time physicians and basic scientists engaged in research, teaching and patient care. Most of these activities take place at the Medical Sciences Building, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, The University Hospital, Veteran's Affairs Medical Center, the Drake Rehabilitation Hospital, and University Pointe. The three year fellowship training program is the heart of the division, and is strengthened by close interactions with colleagues in the college of medicine, Cincinnati Children's, the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center and the Cincinnati community.

Division faculty and staff participate in numerous clinical studies involving both outpatients and hospitalized patients, and ranging from critically ill patients in the intensive care unit to rare lung disease populations (lymphangioleiomyomatosis, alveolar proteinosis, alpha one antitrypsin deficiency and others). Educational programs of the division include training of medical students, residents and fellows in pulmonology and critical care medicine. The division also sponsors several lecture series on aspects of clinical and research pulmonology and critical care medicine, which are open to the University and the community at large.
