Introduction
The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine welcomes referrals for evaluation and treatment of patients who have, or are suspected of having, acute or chronic respiratory disease.
Our clinics are staffed by pulmonologists from the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Major areas of interest include: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, lung cancer evaluation, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis and other chronic diffuse interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary embolic disease, sleep apnea, occupational lung diseases, pleural diseases, tuberculosis and other chronic pulmonary infections.
Areas of unique expertise include cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, alpha one antitrypsin deficiency, sleep medicine and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis,

Shortness of breath
Evaluation of chronic dyspnea (shortness of breath), including differentiation between heart and lung causes. The Dyspnea and Cough Clinic is a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating dyspnea or shortness of breath, exercise intolerance or cough of unknown origin. At University Pointe, patients are seen within the Heart and Vascular Center, with access to cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons who are expert in the evaluation and management of dyspnea. Patients will be evaluated by a pulmonologist specializing in the evaluation of dyspnea and cough. Appropriate, same-day diagnostic testing will be available, including pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas sampling, echocardiography, and exercise testing.

Cough
Evaluation and management of chronic cough, including screening for occult asthma, parenchymal lung disease, postnasal drip and esophageal reflux. Patients will be evaluated by a pulmonologist specializing in the evaluation of dyspnea and cough.

Lung cancer
Screening, evaluation of pulmonary nodules and masses, second opinions regarding lung cancer management, stent placement and cryotherapy for airway management

Sleep disorders
Evaluation of daytime sleepiness, snoring, frequent nighttime awakenings, interrupted breathing during sleep, nonrestful sleep, chronic insomnia, nighttime leg movements, restless leg symptoms, sleepwalking, drop attacks. Patients are evaluated by pulmonologists who are Board in Pulmonary and Critical Care, as well as Sleep Medicine. Sleep laboratories are located at McCollough Hyde, University Pointe and Drake Rehabilitation Hospital.

Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases
Evaluation and management of shortness of breath, exercise limitation, wheezing, cough, sputum production due to chronic obstructive lung disease. Dr. Bruce Trapnell is the Medical Director of the Alpha One Antitrypsin Foundation. Smoking cessation and pulmonary rehabilitation programs available.

Cystic fibrosis and Bronchiectasis
The Pulmonary Division is a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation funded Center for Adult Cystic Fibrosis. State of the art, comprehensive care is provided for cystic fibrosis patients by a staff of physicians who specialize in the care of these patients.
